Stronger Connections, Better New Zealand. KiwiRail powered by Revizto.

New Zealand's rail transport system has been indispensable in moving people and goods for more than 150 years. Currently, 92% of freight in New Zealand does not travel by rail, but boosting rail freight over road freight would lead to 66% fewer emissions.

KiwiRail sets the path for return to profitability as it reverses the previous knock-on effects from unsustainable high costs of machinery maintenance and driver shortages, into cost-effective road maintenance savings and decreased congestion. The state-owned rail enterprise presently utilizes the $315 million funding package from New Zealand Upgrade Programme to scale up capital rail infrastructure projects across metropolitan and regional areas.

  • 92% of freight in New Zealand does not travel by rail.
  • 66% fewer emissions on rail freight over road freight.

KiwiRail Leverages Revizto for ROI

From 2020 to 2024, KiwiRail's Wiri to Quay Park (W2QP) project is only one of the seven capital-intensive rail projects powered by Revizto. As KiwiRail revitalizes the busy junctions of Westerfield & Wiri and builds the Third Main to separate slow-moving freight trains from faster commuter trains, Revizto acts as the glue that holds everything together in its collaborative common data environment (CDE).

Derek Jannings, the Digital Engineering Lead of KiwiRail, emphasizes how Revizto supports the execution, project delivery and interface management of Wiri to Quay Park project beyond the usual lifecycle. Darek shows us how Revizto, as the industry-leading Integrated Collaboration Platform (ICP), helps achieve shared KPIs to unlock high ROI for all stakeholders involved.

“Revizto is our golden thread on the project. It is used in both design and coordination meetings to resolve issues and provide visual context to drive conversations." - Derek Jannings, Digital Engineering Lead of KiwiRail – Wiri to Quay Park (W2QP)

The Challenge

Without an integrated tool for collaboration, complex capital rail projects can go haywire on cost, schedule and quality standpoints. Chaos ensues when different stakeholders use their own tools without a unified strategy in mind. Before Revizto, KiwiRail lists the particular challenges they encountered from a technical perspective.

  • Information was in multiple locations
  • Designers or consultants used model authoring software specific to their discipline and are not able to access other design models
  • Multiple issue tracking registers (spreadsheets) on projects which had no connection to visual information

The Solution

Derek's team dug deeper into the problem and found that information bottlenecks impeded the productivity flow. In doing so, KiwiRail has deployed a synergistic approach on collaboration by investing in Revizto's ICP expertise. Once disconnects from the data silos were eliminated, KiwiRail unlocked unprecedented productivity levels with faster feedback loopcycles.

  • Designs are now coordinated in one place
  • Democratized information 3D models are available for all and not limited to specialized BIM practitioners
  • Visualizations with accessible review information propels increased stakeholder participation

Increasing Bottom Line through Efficiency

For Derek, one challenging aspect of W2QP is how to execute accelerated coordination workflows amid factors such as live environment, agile normal operations and stringent programme schedules. Any delays can cause ripple effects on higher purchase orders, rushed timelines, subpar quality control and compromised safety. In a fast-track railway construction where successful logistical coordination is key, Revizto's disruptive technology helps KiwiRail build faster and better to save time and cover financial bases for profitability.

"Using Revizto as our collaboration environment on projects enables us to reduce risks and errors during construction substantially. Because we work in a live rail environment, when we get access to the rail corridor to conduct infrastructure construction, it is critical we complete the work within the allocated time frames; this means things must be coordinated! With Revizto, everything went according to plan."  - Derek Jannings

Next-Level Clash Detection with Revizto

W2QP is delivered in a parallel build sequence where series of workstreams are allocated under design phase while other build packages are underway construction. Revizto's all-in-one capability as a platform equips KiwiRail's project teams to have a real-time 360° holistic view of the project. Starting from loading the rail clearance models in Revizto, Derek's team coordinates the location of signals and overhead lines where there are tight tolerances in existing conditions to fit the new equipment.

"Revizto enables us to prioritize issues that need to be solved before scheduled physical construction works. The teams work collaboratively to resolve all the issues in the digital world before construction begins: we are under huge time pressure, and there is no room for errors." - Derek Jannings

Steer Coordination Workflows with Interoperability

Construction coordination is at the cusp of an inflection point in its development. To leverage this functionality, Darek empowers his design teams and construction managers to take a proactive approach using Revizto's cross-platform interoperability on design models, as-built models, existing MEP services models and monthly point-cloud drone capture. Keeping the project teams in-sync continuously leads to lesser risks and rework for W2QP, translating to a potential higher ROI for KiwiRail in the future.

"Design updates are uploaded fortnightly and monthly as-built models are able to be feed back into the design environment. This enables the team to always be coordinating with the latest information and updating where necessary adjustments are required —reducing risks and mistakes on-site." - Derek Jannings

Powerful Revizto Features for KiwiRail

Immersive Appearance Templates

Revizto takes visualization to the next level with immersive appearance templates, enabling KiwiRail to drive important conversations on schedule and cost drivers, and acquire critical buy-ins from stakeholders with visualized BIM/VDC and construction workflows, in-office to the key freight hubs of Westerfield and Wiri junctions.‍

Multiple Search Sets

Search Sets in Revizto allow KiwiRail to democratize the large number of models and design disciplines on their projects, then make it available to a wider audience in one platform. Project teams who are not familiar with object trees are able to easily filter models through object properties or predefined areas, empowering KiwiRail with actionable insights.‍

Multistamping & Issue Tracking

Before Revizto, KiwiRail dealt with spreadsheet-based issue registers with no visual representation, resulting in ambiguity with team collaboration workflows. Issue Tracking solves this communication problem between KiwiRail's design and construction teams with predefined metadata, markup reviews, fault detection & data visualizations in granular detail.‍

Custom Properties

Custom Properties in Revizto is paramount to KiwiRail's success on W2QP. With an industry-specific railway expertise comes the need for KiwiRail to think outside of the box with the traditional authoring tools, and bring the specialist inputs of project stakeholders together through custom parameters in rail clearance models.‍

Favorites & Tooltips with Object-Based Navigation

Access to quick,real-time data is immensely critical for the time-sensitive project delivery of WQ2P. KiwiRail utilizes these two Revizto features to bring location-based data and visuals closer together as it switches between parallel workstreams to remove bottlenecks and zero in on the high-priority items in a compressed project timeline.
